Stepping into Philippians

A Journey Through Philippians

The epistle that Paul wrote to the Philippian church certainly demonstrates Joy through adversity.  While sitting in prison Paul pens some of the most positive and encouraging words that have ever been uttered.  This epistle is a challenge to each of us as we seek to follow Christ.  I invite you to join me as we draw relevant thoughts from Paul’s writing each day.  Here is how it will work…

Don’t step on a tomato is formatted to challenge you in five different ways:  Reading, Meditation, Quote of the Day, Story, and Step.

Reading:  As we study Philippians, I want you to read one chapter of the book everyday.  In week one I am going to challenge you to read chapter one everyday.  In week two read chapter two everyday.  Guess what you are going to do on week three and four?  Get the point?

Meditation:  Take a part of the passage and meditate on what you just read.  When I say meditate I don’t want you to light some candles and do some strange yoga exercise.  Just take the recommended verses and think about them.  Ask yourself questions about verses.  What do they mean?  How do they apply to your life as a teen?  Is there anything that they are challenging you to do that you are not doing right now?  Is there a direction in your spiritual journey that needs to be changed based on what you read?  After you have meditated on the verses read the quote of the day.

Quote of the Day:  I like quotes.  In my opinion there is not a better book to get quotes out of than the Bible itself.  The quote of the day usually will tie right in with the story.

Story:  Story telling was a method Jesus regularly used to teach his disciples.  We all like a good story.  I hope you like mine.  The story is just my meditation of how the quote of the day applies to me.  I certainly don’t have all the answers but my goal is to write stories that will cause you to think more about how the spiritual world manifest itself so often in the physical world.

Step:  This is our opportunity to live out what we have read.  A step is the essential part of every walk.  God wants us to walk with him but to do that we need to take steps.  The step in these devotionals is a daily challenge to live by.  It is the practical application of the passage you just meditated on.  The step combines the meditation, quote of the day, and story and pulls them all together with a challenge to walk with God.

Don’t forget that a quality devotion time also involves prayer and communion with God.  I challenge you to pray both before and after you read.  Ask God to show you what He wants you to see from his word.  Praise the Lord for the great things He has done and ask him to help you, your family, your friends and even your enemies to be drawn by his power to walk in accordance with his word.
